Na prostorima cele bivše Jugoslavije, među pripadnicima svih veroispovesti i nacija, postoji jedan zajednički običaj koji se primenjuje vekovima unazad, a to je poklanjanje zlatnika. Kod Srba su se zlatnici poklanjali prilikom rođenja deteta u porodici, kada su se njim darovali beba i majka. Pored toga, njih su poklanjali i kumovi na krštenju, a kasnije i nevesti na venčanju. Ti zlatnici su bili prva imovina pojedinca koja je godinama brižljivo čuvana i ona je bila siguran kapital koji se upotrebljavao, odnosno unovčavao, samo kada dođu „zla vremena“, odnosno za vreme velike nemaštine, bolesti ili rata. Poznato je da je razlog zbog kog su se u ovim posebnim prilikama poklanjali uglavnom zlatnici cena i stabilnost zlata i to što se ona čak i u najvećim krizama uvećavala, a ne smanjivala.
Običaj poklanjanja zlatnika se zadržao i u 21. veku, s tim što se na tržištu razlikuju investicioni i ukrasni zlatnici. I jedni i drugi imaju ozbiljnu vrednost, ali se razlikuju prilike u kojima se poklanjaju.
Šta su investicioni zlatnici?
Kada su u pitanju investicioni zlatnici cena jednog primerka varira, a određuje je vrednost zlata na berzama i veličina, odnosno težina samog zlatnika. Investicioni zlatnici ne moraju nužno da imaju bilo kakvu estetsku vrednost, mogu da budu obični, bez bilo kakvih ukrasa, samo sa oznakom težine. Mogu biti klasični mali, a mogu biti i u obliku zlatnih pločica. Oni se skupljaju i čuvaju u bankama ili sefovima i obično se smatra da je njihova kupovina najbolji način da se sačuva postojeći novac.

Ukrasni zlatnici su mnogo češći od investicionih i uglavnom su manje gramaže i drugačijeg izgleda. Upravo se oni i danas poklanjaju za posebne prilike kao što su rođenje deteta, venčanje, krštenje, diplomiranje i odlazak u penziju. Kada su u pitanju ukrasni zlatnici cena im je daleko niža od cene investicionih i mnogo su lepšeg oblika. Izgledom podsećaju na zlatnike koji su služili kao novac, a njihova težina se kreće od 2 do 14 grama.
Ono što izdvaja ukrasne zlatnike je njihov način izrade i ukrasi na njima. Prema načinu izrade dele se na kovane, foto i gravirane zlatnike.
- Kovani zlatnici su načešći i ističu se po gravuri na prednjoj i zadnjoj strani. Mogu biti u dve boje i najčešće na njima ne može da se gravira dodatna posveta. Najčešći motivi na njima su religiozni, sa likom nekog svetitelja ili manastira.
- Gravirani zlatnici se mnogo lakše izrađuju, i glavna prednost im je to što se na njihovom naličju može izgravirati posveta. Motivi na njima su takođe religiozni, ali mogu se naći i oni sa unapred izgraviranim čestitkama za rođenje deteta, krštenje ili venčanje.
- Foto zlatnici su najveća novina na tržištu i izrađuju se na osnovu odnete fotografije koja obeležava jednu životnu priču. Kada su u pitanju foto zlatnici cena im je viša od kovanih i graviranih baš zbog toga što su personalizovani.
